I really hate the smell of cigarette smoke. There's nothing like being in a meeting and sitting next to the guy who smells like he just bowled a few games over his lunch hour.
I hate the smell of smoke as well, but I think there are smokers out there who just don't care and don't pay attention and since we don't smoke we are more aware of the smell.
My husband is constantly washing his hands after he smokes to help get rid of that smell. He doesn't like to smell bad (he is very clean)! For the most part you can not tell he smokes, but he also doesn't smoke a pack a day!
I strongly believe, as many of my friends smoke, that you can be a smoker and still smell good in your daily life and be conscience of those non-smokers around them. I hate that there are rude people out there who smoke that give smokers a bad rap.
Perhaps you are right WK, there may be some people who don't want to offend anyone but this gentleman clearly isn't one of them. He must have just walked right into the building after smoking his eighth cigarette in a row. It was awful. I was suffocating because I couldn't breathe clean air.
As an ex-smoker, there are two kinds of smokers: 1) Hard Core Smokers. These are the folks like you sat next to that always smell bad and don't notice and don't care. They smoke in their house, in the car and in other people's houses. If you received a present from their house, it would reek too.
2) Considerate smokers, like WKs husband that realizes that smoking smells bad to those that do not smoke (or even to those that do, stale smoke is gross smelling).
So, yes that is gross, but the bottom line is that some people don't care. Think about the people that ALWAYS have terrible coffee breath. I think it is the same thing.

Hard to say if they know it or not. I would think they have some idea. It's such an intrusive smell.
